Basics Of Flying In YS Flight.
This document teaches you the basics of flying. For this I used a Cessna Model 172 Skyhawk (an addon) on the Atusgi Airbase map. As the Cessna does not come with YS Flight and you do not want to install it you may want to use the YS-11 as this has a similar performance rating.

Taking Off

Taking off is fairly easy, but it is not just accelerating to full speed and pulling back on the stick.

Firstly if you are not already on the runway taxi onto it, then align your plane so it is inline with the markings on the runway.

Next check the rudder is centred, brakes are off, and flaps are down.

Now accelerate until you get enough speed to take off (about 90 knots) and then slowly pull back on the stick until the nose is 10 - 20 degrees. If you pull back too much the tail will hit the ground and your plane will blow up, this is called a tail strike. In real life you probably would not blow up but your plane would probably get quite damaged.

Now you need to retract the landing gear (if it is retractable) and continue gaining altitude until you get to 500 - 1000 feet, also stay on the heading of 10 degrees.

At this height level out, you want to keep this height and a steady speed, a good speed will be about 110 - 120 knots. To do this you have to get the climb metre to stay at zero. An easier way to see if you are flying level may be to turn on the vector indicator (press V), when it is on the horizon you are flying level.

Now you are flying at a steady speed and height you will need to go onto your next challenge, turning.

Turning

Turning a plane in the air is different from turning on the ground, you have to rotate the plane in the direction you want left or right by using the ailerons. Also which doing this you need to slightly pull back on the stick slightly to maintain your current altitude when performing a turn.

We are going to fly around the airport perimeter so we need to make a left hand turn. First move the stick to the left until you have a bank angle of about 30 degrees. You should see the bank angle indicator move clockwise to the first marking on the right hand side (if it went the other way you turned the wrong way), when it gets to this position move the stick back to then centre.

You can continue to turn like this, but you will see the nose will start to fall and you will lose altitude. To compensate for this pull the stick back to move the nose up until you it is level. While turning you will also need to increase the throttle to keep a steady speed.

Keep turning until you have a heading of 200 degrees and then move the stick to the right so your bank angle is zero. While you were changing the bank angle the heading should have changed to 190 degrees, if not change to this heading.

Now keep this heading 190 degrees, and a steady speed 110 - 120 knots. The runway should be parallel to you, keep flying on this heading until you get to the town that is about 10 miles from the airbase.

When you reach the town do a left turn with a 30 degrees bank angle until you get to heading 01, then you can start your landing.

Landing

First you need to make sure you aircraft is aligned with the runway. To do this turn on the ILS (instrumental landing system) by pressing the I (i) key. You will need to adjust your plane so that the LOC line (vertical line) is in the middle of the screen. If the line is to the left of the centre of the HUD you have to turn left, and if it is to the right you have to turn right.

Once the aircraft is horizontally aligned with the runway you will need to start descending and slowing down. The GS line (glide slope, horizontal line) shows a guide slope which is good for you to follow. If it is below the centre of your HUD you will need to decrease altitude, and if it is above you will need to increase altitude.

While descending try to slow down to about 90 knots and extend the landing gear.

Keep descending until you are above the runway and at about 100 feet and going at about 100 knots. Turn off the ILS, adjust the pitch so the nose is 5 degrees below the horizon and cut off the power (if you are going quite slow you may want to keep it as it is or increase it).

When you get to 10 feet, level the nose out and you should have touchdown. Make sure you do not pull up the nose otherwise you will takeoff again. Now if you have not already cut the power do so, and turn on the brakes. Use the rudder to align your plane with the centre of the runway.

Taxiing

When you slow down to about 10 - 20 knots turn off the brakes. Now you have to taxi to one of the terminals. To do this find a taxiway that leads off the runway and use the rudder to turn into it, stay in the centre of the taxiway.

When you get to the end of the taxiway turn towards one of the terminals or buildings until you are parallel with it, you should be on the side opposite of the building on the taxiway.

Now turn towards the building and turn on the brakes, you should stop in front of the building facing it. Congratulations, you have landed and safely stopped.
