Carrier Landing

| |
A carrier landing is one of the more trickier things to do in YS Flight, but is rewarding when done correctly. First of all, make sure you have a plane small enough to land on a carrier. Line yourself up with the runway on the carrier and not the carrier itself.
Second of all turn on your ILS (Insturment Landing System-activated by pressing "I") as well as your Flight Direction Indicator by pressing the "V" key. These will give you some assistance in the approach. You will see on the carrier deck before the wire is a black area-keep the little airplane on your hud (Flight Direction Indicator) in this area and closer to the wire than the back of the carrier.
Once you break about 2500ft lower your gear, air brakes (if needed), and flaps and re-adjust for the lift given by the flaps but make sure youre not about to stall (note if youre too high then lower your flaps down). Try and keep your airspeed less than 150 depending on the plane but for most this is a safe range.
Make small adjustments as nessecary and before you touch down pull back on the stick to get your nose up. Then when youre over the carrier drop the nose to about 0-5 degrees and it should catch if you followed everything right. If you didnt then quickly pull your brakes off and go full throttle and try again.
Try doing some touch and goes-if you know the controls in YS Flight then you should be able to use some of the pilots assistance insturments to your advantage. The rest takes practice.
Or if you like try Victory103s realism method:
To begin with the break pattern is 800ft, up the starboard (right) side of the carrier at about 300-400kts, hook down, normally at the bow (pointy end) a sharp left 60 degree or more angle of bank turn is started, normally 3-4gs in the turn. You want to end up on downwind (opposite direction) at 600ft and 150-180kts and dirty (flaps/gear/brake deployed) anywhere from a mile or less from the ship. Look left and start your base turn when you see the edge of the LA (landing area), on a real carrier this is painted white and called the rounddown. Normally the F-14/A-6/EA-6B land with speedbrakes deployed, the Hornets do not, of course full power after you land in case of a bolter/hook skip. After you trap, hook up and fold the wings. Now taxi to the cat for the take off. |
